  • Dell 17″ laptop advisory… (9400/e1705/m1710/m90 even Inspiron 6400)

Shocking bit of news here…. (sorry, I couldn’t help it.) This is a serious piece though. Apparently the Dell models listed above (Inspiron) and their other 17″ cousins may be affected by a rather peculiar, but serious problem. The screws on the bottom may be putting out 19-65 volts AC (oops.) From the linked article, this issue can be worked around by using the 3-pronged (read-grounded) power adapter that is available for the laptops. (However, Dell has not said anything publicly, it sounds as though the 2 prong adapter may be standard for these.)

  • Link spam surge….

Spam spam spam spam…. the last couple days have been busy for the akismet spam plugin for my sites. They’ve been catching a lot of spam comments it appears. Many of them (the comments) seem to be filled with links to forum posts. I’ve noticed several have been shut down at this point. It’s not clear to me if the spammers are exploiting true vulnerabilities in the forum software, or simply finding forums that allow anyone to sign up and post. Either way, they’re leeching other peoples bandwidth to try to hussle (hustle?) their stuff. Along those lines, I wonder if there is a good listing/directory of legit sources of prescription drugs online? The topic is so awash in spammy/spamvertised/offshore based sites it’s hard to know easily who to trust/who not to.

  • Time, value, ROI, Google and this site…. Googlebummed

This is a fairly significant “state of this site” type post and well… if you’re a usual visitor you might want to read/skim this one. It’s been about 15 months or so since the last big redesign of this site and as some long time lurkers may know, the updates were FEW and far between before moving to WordPress and this new layout. I mean, a year or so between updates was not uncommon. In the last year+ I’ve had a few spans where a month or so has gone by without posting, but in many cases I’ve been posting multiple (in other cases MANY MANY) posts in a single day.

  • Zoom H4 first look…

If you’re interested I’ve got a “first impressions” look at the Zoom H4 over on the ashevillemusiclessons.com site. I couldn’t decide where it would be more appropriate to post…..

  • Clearing the deck….

As you mgiht can tell, I’ve been trying to “clear the deck” of posts that I’ve been meaning to put up. Some are just links to several pages that I’ve kept up for a few days because it was interesting. But just so you know we’re in the midst of a post flood.

  • IE7 coming within the month, Firefox 2 RC2 out as well

It’s kind of interesting to get to do a “browser wars” kind of post where I mention a new release of two browsers coming out about the same time…. The release of IE7 is coming within weeks we are reminded by zdnet. It’s noted that it will be rolled out through automatic updates not long after it’s official release. Incidents.org is less than enthusiastic about the release suggesting that no matter how much of an improvement over IE6 this new release will be it’s bringing us features that have been in competing browsers since 1996 and diversity of browsers is a good policy.

  • NO, Google has NOT cancelled click-to-call

It was an odd message that started this on the official google blog. I saw it and thought this doesn’t make sense – it doesn’t sound like an official statement and it claims it was translated from another language???? Posted by “Maximal” here is the original Google Blog post…

After concientiously considering, Google has decided not to continue with Google Click-to-call project. The project has been in the media on last days because of the notice of Google agreement with e-Bay. We finally consider click-to-call agreement with e-Bay a monopolistic aproach that would damage small companies in the CRM area.

This message has been translated using Google language tools.

  • DEP incompatibilities HP Deskjet 5550 printing blank pages

I had a frustrating morning last week. I had setup a new pc, transferred data and gotten everything in fairly nice shape. I had got the old printer attached and setup (HP Deskjet 5550). In fact I had done a test page through the printers software at the end of the install process (Some sort of deskjet toolbox software, not Windows test page pattern.) Then we were making sure everything worked and they went to print out a UPS label from Worldship. The printer had come unplugged in the last rearrange, so I plugged power back in and the printer loaded a page, ran the head back and forth twice and spit out a blank page. Oh, we were using a parallel cable – I’ve seen some parallel cable based printers get “flustered” when power is lost and back on (especially if it was in the midst of a job when the power was pulled) – so reboot…

  • New Data Leaks section

I’ve added yet another category for “data leaks”. This is where I’ll put news along the lines of X company leaked data on yyyyy customers. It’s unfortunate that this is something that likely happens daily. There is no way that I can keep up with EVERYTHING, but I’ll try to post the bigger events in this category. I have many customers that say they’re concerned about people getting their credit card or bank numbers and for that reason they don’t do ANY transactions online or have any of that data on their computers. Well, I hate to break it to you, but the genie is already out of the bottle, because the companies that we do business with (ON OR OFFLINE) have all your data on computers and prohibiting yourself from online transactions is NO guarantee that you won’t have your data stolen or be a victim of Identity theft.
