The news is that Nero has announced NeroLinux a version of their cd burning software that will run under the linux operating system. The software is available in either rpm or deb binary (for either debian based or red-hat based package managed systems.) I’ve noticed that Nero install under wine with no real problems. I’ve never tried to use it for cd burning under wine as I’ve preferred either (command line) cdrecord/growisofs or (gui) k3b for cd burning.

An editor at tech republic gave a challange not too long ago to Linux users to step up and offer articles along the lines of the top 10 things to do before hooking a linux pc up to the internet. Click to read the first of these submissions (I don’t know if there will be more featured, but more are viewable here.)

Samba (Windows) domain controller using ubuntu linux
There’s a good how-to at (where else) howtoforge.com on the topic of setting up ubuntu Linux (with samba) as a Primary domain controller for your network of windows machines. This uses tdb instead of LDAP and is suitable for networks with up to 250 users. The advantage here is that it’s simpler to setup than LDAP integration. Of course, samba for simple file/print sharing is fairly easy to setup, the domain controller “stuff” is usually a bit tricker.

16,000 new viruses this year
This is for all those people that say to me. “There haven’t been any new viruses lately have there?” It’s really amazing to me that people think if it’s not on the national news it doesn’t happen…. According to Pc Pro, Sophos has reported that 16000 new viruses have been added to their database this year. Along with that comes a flood of 1940 new viruses last month added to Sophos’ virus signatures. (That mark is a record for one month.)

Linux sysadmin toolbox..
This article from enterprise.linux.com is the second on those essential linux command line utilities for system administrators. Covered this time around are netcat, tcpdump, ethereal, nmap, MultiTail, find Xargs, awk and sed, bash and cvs. I’ve never used MultiTail, but it sounds like it’s worth looking at. Nmap is virtually essential in network auditing. Sed is one of those utitilies that it seems you can do most anything with.

Zoneminder for a linux based home security DVR system
This is filed under security, but a slightly different angle than the usual computer security articles. I just ran across a link I’ve kept to Zoneminder. Zoneminder is a neat linux application to help you setup your very own DVR (digital video recorder) for a security camera type (CCTV ?) setup. I originally came across the page by way of a livecd that uses the mklivecd tools that I was working with for a couple projects. Typically a CCTV type security camera system can involve some expensive software for the monitoring of cameras.

VLC as a great multimedia video player/ network streamer
I sometimes forget that VLC is cross-platform. Given that linux is my primary platform I’ve used it quite a bit in playing around with streaming a video from one machine to another. Engadget has a great tutorial up on using VLC (Video Lan Client) to stream multimedia content from one pc to another. It’s really a great utility. It’s also available for a variety of platforms including Windows (even CE (PocketPC)), and Linux, OSX…

Linux won’t boot – corrupt MBR (Master Boot Record) repair tip
How many times have I seen this, a dual-boot system with a sideways Master Boot Record (MBR). This is one of those ways that Windows systems sometimes don’t “play well with others”. This tip at linuxhelp.blogspot.com tells of an unfortunate Windows hibernate that rendered his system unbootable. A linux cd is all it takes to repair the damage.

Opera Software patches Security holes
Opera Software has released an update to the Opera web browser. The update addresses 2 security flaws. One flaw was related to the FlashPlayer plugin, the other was a code execution bug and affected Unix or Linux users. Opera 8 has recently been released for free download (without ads as far as I know).

Some links to purchase linux boxed set installs
OK, truth be told linux is usually thought of as a download for free and install operating system and there are LOT’s of ways to do that. But it is also available for purchase at various places, from the different distributions web sites.
Also, these are links to the product pages at Amazon. They have a new link style that I was curious to test out and see what it looked like.
