The dust over the zotob worm infection has settled a bit at this point. (You can bet there are still infected machines out there though so if you haven’t patched yet – DO IT and check for signs of infection.) Among other things, The Security Fix is analyzing the impact.

Phishing scheme aimed at educating users
A number of New York state employees and a number of cadets at West Point were targetted in a recent phishing scheme. This one was perpetrated by the good guys though to wake them up to how realistic a phishing attempt could look. The employees that bit were “given a gentle slap on the wrist”.

Linux desktop rallying cry
Over at Desktop Linux there’s an opinion piece that’s really a rallying cry for the linux desktop. He looks at what is promised in Vista and tries to discern what will really be different than we currently have on the Windows platform. Looks at the potential expense and concludes that now is the time for linux vendors to REALLY be making a push.

Mail Viruses Junk Spam Phishing and now Dark?
Okay, I’ve seen a new term come across the horizon in the battle of the email inbox. First there were viruses, then junk mail, which became known as Spam and then Phishing attacks now we’re up to DarkMail. According to scmagazine , an IT security focused publication, the earmarks of darkmail are similar to junkmail but greater in volume. According to the article one domain withstood 10 million messages in one day as the sender went alphabetically through addresses on the domain.

Linux in city government
Newforge has a good article about the city of Kenosha Wisconsin and their experience to linux. They started their “test” about 10 years ago starting with a DNS server and or a mailserver. They’ve moved now to a complete server/thin-client setup. They initially saved $100,000 a year with Linux, now that number is higher from reduced staffing costs. They have an IT staff of 1 and 1/2 people (I’ve GOT to see that.) They claim if they had PC’s (Windows I assume), they would have to have twice as many on staff.

Bank of the west notice (sigh)
Well, how long ago was I talking about phishing attacks? Just a few posts back it seems and in my inbox this evening was the above subject line. It’s almost funny, since I don’t actually HAVE an account with Bank of the West, but since I was feeling a bit curious I thought I’d pick it apart, see where it came from and where the site was hosted.
