One of Google’s longest Beta-tests… Google News has now graduated from beta status. There is a “suggest news stories” options in the personalized search feature. I wondered if it would ever be non-beta. Somewhere along the line I had read speculation that the holdup was advertising and there was trepidation that targetted ads within Google News would spur a revolt among the news feed providers. A quick look doesn’t seem to show any ads – so that speculation seems to have been a bit off the mark I guess.

Page banned from Google?
So for the past month and a half I’ve been puzzling over northcarolinagenealogy.net and it’s mysterious sudden disappearance from google. I mean… let’s see, there are a couple hundred posts there. It uses the same template as this and the South Carolina genealogy site do. Nothing really different than the South Carolina Genealogy site (more posts…?) I don’t have any links to “bad neighborhoods” that I can tell over there, but doing a site:northcarolinagenealogy.net search at either google.com or blogsearch.google.com turns up NOTHING. (While similar searches for southcarolinagenealogy.org or averyjparker.com turn up scads of pages, and a November search would show the same for northcarolinagenealgy.net)

Hacking with Google (and without Google.)
I found a couple of interesting presentations on network security related topics. Primarily these are about using the internet and search engines for gathering information on specific “targets”. Their very interesting from a “self analysis” point of view as well.

Google Video Store
It looks as though Google will be selling video content for as little as $1.99 each. At CES today they’ve announced deals with CBS for some current running shows (CSI for instance). Also, a large number of older CBS shows including a few entries in the Star Trek franchise, I Love Lucy, The Brady Bunch, etc… will be made available. There’s a deal with the NBA for games (24 hour delay.) Looks like some music videos, and a good deal of other content.

Google rumors galore….
There are all sorts of rumors circulating about Google’s product announcements tomorrow at CES. There are still stories floating around about a Google PC running linux and there are stories about pay-download videos and a software bundle. No official word on these from Google. (They had denials about PC talks from some of the retailers that were supposedly approached.) The Google Cube is listed as the codename for the Google PC according to one article.

Google Video Player?
There’s a zdnet article that seems to indicate that Google may be close to releasing a standalone video player. Currently videos.google.com uses a plugin that’s called google video viewer. The above article gives some interesting information and a good bit of speculation. The speculation is that they will release vlc (video lan client) in a modified form to allow pay-per-view video.

The Google PC and OS
Rumors have been around for some time about Google launching Google OS, an Operating System to compete with Microsoft Windows. Well…. now the rumors are circulating around the Google PC (with Google OS). The Latimes.com is reporting that Google has been meeting with people from Wal-Mart (and others) to distribute a cheap pc. This would be a Google PC running something other than Windows – Google OS….

Virtual machine as a safe browsing environment
I mentioned this in my summary yesterday morning as a possible workaround until there are patches for the WMF vulnerability that’s been big news the last week. I notice that incidents.org has mentioned it too as a possibility today. VMware has released VMPLayer as a free way of running premade virtual machines.

Search Engines Submission
This is what hopefully will be the begining of a series of threads on webhosting, web marketing, etc. The first topic up is search engines submission. (This may take several articles…) It’s important to get your web site up and mostly fleshed out before submitting to search engines. Why? Although many may take some time before they spider your site, it is best to make sure that there is a fair amount of content available for them to spider. Some may actually spider fairly quickly, within minutes initially.
