  • A few other odd updates…

Just updated some information on the Virtualization page adding some information about virtualbox which I have spent some time with lately.

I’ve also had a big vpn/dd-wrt project going which I’ve teased out a bit of information on my dd-wrt and openvpn pages. I haven’t given our “recipe” for it yet, but it’s a vpn that can bridge between any two networks (regardless of network address collision issues…. well there is a small subset of cases where we could still find network address collision, but it’s much more robust than anything else I’ve done in that area.

I’ve also added a bit to my Online Virtual Servers page. I’ve been trying out gigenetcloud as an alternative to slicehost/vps.net – not for any particular reason, just to have options. Their billing is a slightly different model which may be of interest to many. By the way, I am still a HUGE fan of VPS.net. I can’t recommend them ENOUGH as a cloud VPS provider. It seems as though they are always rolling out great new features and they have great pricing and data centers in so many locations to boot. Their setup is soooooo resilient and their support is superb.

I think I’ll have to hold off on any of the other stray thoughts that I’ve had the last few weeks to post here as it’s looking like another busy stretch… here’s wishing everyone a good start to summer and a good 4th of July coming up!

  • DD-WRT v.24 final released for Linksys WRT54GL and other routers

I just found out today that dd-wrt v.24 has reached it’s final release. (As opposed to the previous release candidates.) I have several linksys wrt54gl routers that I’ve installed earlier versions of the alternative firmware on. I’ve been really pleased with the results as well. Most of my installs are based on v.23sp2, but I’m looking forward to taking full advantage of some of the new v.24 features. (Virtual SSID with (I think) virtual BSSID which should solve the wireless discovery problems.)

Downloads from dd-wrt are quite slow right now. I don’t think I’m the only one trying to get a look at their latest effort.

  • The Linksys WRT54GL and DD-WRT firmware

I’ve had a couple of small wireless projects lately and have really been having a great time playing around with the Linksys-Cisco WRT54GL Wireless-G Broadband Router and one of the many GREAT 3rd party firmwares dd-wrt. I know, for a couple years I’ve meant to get a hold of one of these little linksys boxes for testing. I had read about OpenWRT and found it an interesting idea. For those that don’t know, the original linksys wrt54g wireless routers were designed based around a customized linux firmware. What made this nice is linksys made the source code available for their firmware which made it a lot easier for others to improve upon linksys’ built in software.
