  • Update on the Sansa Clip Plus 8GB

Last year I got a Sansa Clip Plus 8GB. I just wanted to do a followup post after I’ve used it for a while. One year on (well 11 months on….) it’s still rock solid. I’ve had no problems with it, it has a really good battery life. I really don’t charge it for weeks at a time. (I’m not listening constantly, but when I listen more I would guess about 8 hours use per charge.)

I don’t think I’ve bothered to update the firmware (it’s not broken so I’m not fixing it…)

In general it reminds me of the choice to get the Kindle. It does one thing well! Nice and portable, standard usb charger and easy to add music to. So, one year on – I would definitely recommend it, if mine were missing I would get it again. It seems quite durable (my 2 year old got a hold of it once and it almost went missing – but cleaned up nicely.)

  • Hard drive testing utilities

Windows users know chkdsk, linux users know fsck… users of each MIGHT have heard of SMART. These are different ways of TESTING hard drives. Well, there’s also a utility called TestDisk that looks promising for recovering data… Here’s the clip from their site. “free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.” It runs under a variety of OS’s and recognizes several different disk formats.

  • The D-Link DWL-800AP+ as a wireless repeater to extend wireless range – Part 2

For starters, I hooked the D-link DWL-800AP+ up and connected it through a crossover cable to my usb network card. That way I could access it exclusively on one adapter and look online for information with the other adapter, which came in quite handy. The first thing I found was that by default the dwl-800ap+ was configured to use 192.168.0.30 as it’s IP address. This one was not configured with the default settings. (Used / via ebay….) So, I did an nmap -sT 192.168.0.* -e eth1 which scanned the whole 192.168.0. list of addresses using my eth1 adapter (as opposed to the default adapter eth0)

  • VideoC is not a real video player

Sunbeltblog has a story about the “VideoC” video player… apparently they discovered this when visiting a site. A video starts to play and then abruptly stops and claims that “VideoC” player needs to install to view the clip. VideoC is not REALLY a video player just a clever way to get loads of spyware on your system.

  • Open Source Clipart Library

I’m putting this under software for Windows and Linux, because this is something I’ve been asked about several times. What kind of clipart comes with OpenOffice.org or with Koffice. There are some samples usually, but clipart is one of those areas that has traditionally been hard to come by for free online. (Yes you could buy a collection of clipart.) Well, The open Clip art Library is filling that gap.
