I’m writing this from the laptop. Having run Mandriva 2006 without any real significant bumps for a couple weeks I’ve come to a point where I’m ready to take the plunge on the desktop. The desktop is my primary workstation. The laptop get’s occasional light use and is the one I’m more likely to play with when it comes to possibly losing configuration information or scripts (because I’ve got things copied to the desktop and server.)

Opera security patch
I saw this earlier today, but had thought it was an issue already covered (just before Thanksgiving there was an opera security update I think.) Anyway… Secunia has an advisory on a security vulnerability in the Opera Web browser. Users are encouraged to upgrade to v. 8.51. The SecurityFix has the story. Lookes like VMWare has officially released the first version of their VMPlayer. The previous was a pre-release preview/beta. It looks like it’s now officially a 1.0.0-final.

Samba (Windows) domain controller using ubuntu linux
There’s a good how-to at (where else) howtoforge.com on the topic of setting up ubuntu Linux (with samba) as a Primary domain controller for your network of windows machines. This uses tdb instead of LDAP and is suitable for networks with up to 250 users. The advantage here is that it’s simpler to setup than LDAP integration. Of course, samba for simple file/print sharing is fairly easy to setup, the domain controller “stuff” is usually a bit tricker.

Good article on what OpenOffice could learn from Firefox
There’s a good writeup on what OpenOffice.org could learn from firefox. It raises some interesting points. One of which is that software can be designed to meet the needs of say, 60% of the market, the framework firefox has for extenstions helps that other 40% find a way that the browser can meet their needs.
