According to Barrapunto and Linux Juegos (Spanish for Linux Games), the release of “X.org 7.0 RC0” (RC zero?)…. will provide more 3d graphics drivers. “Outstandingly improved support for 3d acceleration” especially for ATI cards is how I interpret the news….

Google Guide
I’ve not run across this resource before, but it looks to have been around for a while. When I have people ask how I’m able to search and find what I’m looking for online, I may suggest this to them because it covers a lot of features of Google. The resource is The Google Guide It all can be printed out to a 149 page tome, or can be perused online. It covers many facets of searching in Google.

Backing up and restoring MySQL databases
In the past few days I’ve been working on an automated backup system for both my site databases and a few others. I thought I’d take a bit to go through what I’ve done. It’s really simple, but I suspect there are some that either don’t realise it’s this simple, or will think this is rocket science. If you are well versed in command-line MySQL interaction you probably already know this….

Free Ext2 Ext3 driver for Windows
Barrapunto.com is reporting on a Noticias.com article (on another story by… sorry… got carried away.) Their reporting on a freely available Ext2 Ext3 driver for Windows. It should allow full read/write access (although I would quail at allowing Windows to write to ext2 or 3…. just me though.)

Phishing and Podcasting enter the Oxford Dictionary
Ironic that I find this news first at barrapunto.com, but it turns out the words Phishing and Podcasting have officially entered the Oxford English dictionary. Wiki has made it as well, as have Beatbox and Europop. The writeup goes on to compare the uptake of new words in the Oxford English dictionary with that of the Real Academia (Royal Academy) (Keepers of correct Spanish).

Lawsuit to block the release of Windows Vista?
Betanews.com is reporting on a move by a public interest lawyer (who is running as a Republican for the Governors Office of Illinois) who is attempting to block the distribution of Windows Vista. He intends to ask Microsoft for an unconditional warranty that the operating system is free from major bugs that could lead to security vulnerabilities. (Good luck with that one…)

Raft of Microsoft updates out – time to get updating
The promised batch of windows updates for today are now out and it turns out there were 3 critical updates out of the 6 released. It looks as though the biggy is an RPC problem with the plug and play system (Plug and play needing a remote procedure call?) This is one that could likely be quickly exloited. There is a workaround on this of having port 139 and 445 firewalled (many places do that by default now, last I checked my ISP does.) Don’t take that as a tool for complacence though. Patch it anyway!

Browser competition, market decisions and open standards
I just read a blog entry at zdnet. The writer, John Carroll, essentially asserts that the free market has chosen that monopoly in the case of the web browser IS what’s best for it. There are a few things that I think he fails to take into account in his perspective on browsers and competition.
