Website Spokesperson

Have you ever visited a website and had someone start talking to you.  No not over your shoulder, from the page itself?  I have and I’m still not decided on whether it’s a good thing or not.  I can definitely see it turning off some people, but it’s slick and can give a positive first impression if done well.

These website spokesperson videos are pretty easy and cheap to do.  Cheaper than I would have expected and I’ve just run across one company that does this.

The main annoyance I have with them is that usual my web browsing is done either quietly or in an environment where I have the sound muted.  Of course, there are times I forget and if I’m in an office and my computer starts singing or talking it is a bit aggravating.  However, having a talking spokesmodel on your web page would seem to give it a more human/personal touch.  I like that aspect of it.

I’m growing to appreciate that business done well is probably more about building relationships than we typically think and I would imagine that this is something that people probably respond well to.  They claim increased user engagement with the site and I suppose they would.  They also claim higher conversions.  I’m not quite sure if this is the case and would love to see testing of this.
Anyway what follows is a sample:
