Collection company….

I’m quite frustrated this evening. Another long day of computer problems and tonight I come in to around the tenth call from a collection agency. The kicker in this case is that it’s not for me, but for someone I’ve never heard of. Over the years we’ve had a fair amount of credit card debt and have worked our way to within about one payment of being out from under. All with no defaults, no collection agencies, etc. We’ve followed the rules in other words. And the last 2 weeks we’ve been harrassed by a collection agency looking for someone that we’ve never met that I can only assume gave our phone number. The collection agency is….

LTD Financial Services and the number this phantom individual is asked to call is 1-800-741-2100…. for now I’ll hold off on the extension, but it seems to always be the same one (at least 4 times it has been.) I’ve probably left 3-4 messages, my wife has left at least 2 messages, a third time she talked to someone else (the extension always drops to voice mail.) Anyway… the third time she talked to someone who said they could remove our number from their list. I’ve picked up the call directly 2 or so times and both times was told that our number would be removed and then the second time I called tonight got the same promise.

Of course, I’ve got quite a few thoughts on what to do at this point…. “how many voice mails could I leave there….” “maybe I could leave dozens of messages looking for the same person….”…. The better business bureau is one of the more reasonable avenues my wife suggested. I’ve even wondered at what level repeated calls from collection agencies could be construed as harrassment legally. Of course, I hate to spend money on legal services for something that I have no responsibility for to begin with.

So how do you prove a negative?

Not necessarily computer related, but I’m sure I’m not the only person this has happened to.
