Watching Google’s domain registrations

Google has become such a dominant company…. it’s good to know someone is watching where they might be going tomorrow…. searchenginewatch.com has a list of some recent domain name registrations by Google. googlelibrary.org, googlemagazines.com, googlepapers.org, googlemicrofilm.com among others (usually the .net/org/biz variants…) Interesting to see where they may be going. There’s also a list (through the above article) of all domains registered by Google.

Along those lines, I, Cringely has an interesting analysis of Google’s future use of all that “dark fiber” it’s been buying up…. something along the lines of placing shipping container filled data centers at major network peering nodes. Then using the dark fiber as a backend network for data caching, delivery, etc…. to provide faster access to content for internet users… “thermonuclear akamai” I think he dubs it… Interesting stuff.
