Sony BMG suspends pressing DRM protected cds
It looks as though Sony has decided to suspend pressing cds with the XCP copy protection software. Numerous sources are reporting on the “capitulation” of Sony on the matter. It seems as though this is a temporary stop, from what I read they will likely pursue other means of DRM.
Their statement said they would basically “re-examine aspects of their content protection initiative.”
Also today at a conference a Department of Homeland Security official said, *(among other things),
“It’s very important to remember that it’s your intellectual property — it’s not your computer. And in the pursuit of protection of intellectual property, it’s important not to defeat or undermine the security measures that people need to adopt in these days”
(which seemed to be directed towards Sony…)
Somehow I’m not overly encouraged that Sony has learned where this went wrong. They’ve been extremely slow to wake up and face the problem. I almost wonder if they think the worst part is that someone discovered what they were doing?
