Measure, slice, print, measure workflow
Citation value comes from a reproducible protocol: same STL, same spool, three slicers, calipers after cool-down.

Citation magnet pack: orca-slicer-comparison-magnet.zip — OpenSCAD test bracket, RESULTS.md, profile drop folders, photo checklist. Meet the review standard.

This article is the site’s highest-ROI content investment: a reproducible comparison protocol for functional FDM. Fill the table on your printer. Empty cells beat invented millimeters.

Versions & hardware under test (declare yours in RESULTS.md)

ItemRequirement
SlicersOrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio — record exact versions
PrinterOne machine only for all three prints
Nozzle0.4 mm class unless you document otherwise
FilamentOne PETG spool, dried; same color for all three
InstrumentDigital calipers (0.01 mm resolution class)
Test geometryPack cad/bracket-m5-clearance.scad — 40×20×8 mm, two Ø5.2 mm holes

Fixed settings (must match across slicers)

SettingValue
Layer height0.20 mm
Line width0.42 mm
Walls3
Infill20% (same pattern in all three)
TempsFrom your temp tower on that spool

Calibration before comparison

  1. Mechanical baseline (belts, Z offset, clean plate).
  2. Temp tower for the spool.
  3. Flow / extrusion multiplier.
  4. Pressure advance if firmware supports it.
  5. Only then export three gcode/3mf jobs from the same STL.

Comparison matrix (fill from RESULTS.md)

Outer length (mm)40.00
Outer width (mm)20.00

Publish your filled table (comment, gist, or fork of the pack). That is what other sites will cite.

What broke / confused

  • Comparing slicers on wet vs dry filament — you reviewed humidity.
  • Importing a 0.6 mm profile onto a 0.4 mm nozzle.
  • Changing global speed after flow calibration.
  • Measuring warm plastic (reads large, lies after cool-down).

How to cite / reproduce

  1. Download the pack.
  2. Export STL from the OpenSCAD source.
  3. Run the three prints; fill RESULTS.md.
  4. Link back to this article so readers share one protocol.

Physical layer (what turns this into a true review)

  • Photos: top of each print, one caliper-on-hole shot, one defect if any.
  • Numbers: cool fully; measure hole Ø at 0°/90°; fill the matrix — empty cells beat invented mm.
  • Share: contribute-results with printer + table + photo URLs for moderated publish.

Until first-party photos land, this page is an honest protocol. That is the correct interim posture — not a fake data table.

Review verdict

Use this protocol before arguing slicer tribalism. OrcaSlicer is an excellent daily driver for functional parts when you want calibration depth without a closed ecosystem — but the citation is the table you measure, not the logo on the splash screen. Prefer PrusaSlicer if your fleet is already Prusa-shaped; Bambu Studio when machine-specific convenience on Bambu hardware matters more than cross-brand profiles.

Rule: no “Tool Review” without versions, a table, failure modes, and a verdict. Photos of the three prints + calipers close the standard completely.
