Slashdot is reporting, as well as other sources, that Google is preparing the launch of an Instant Messenger.
One story suggests that Google is running a jabber server on talk.google.com Jabber is an open source messenger platform. The story says that an announcement will be made Wednesday "of a new “communication toolâ€".
I suspect if this happens it may be more than "just" an instant messenger, the things they've done thus far have had a tendency to improve on the segment they enter. Maps.google.com was beyond most of the competition at it's launch, google desktop was an innovation as well.
The Google blog doesn't have anything on this yet, they're still talking about the launch of Google Desktop 2 and the new sidebar.
