It looks as though Gentoo 2005.1 has been released. The ModWiki.org's tech blog has mentioned it. Of course for more details you can look at the main gentoo site. Gentoo is a Linux distribution that has gained a following for the fact that everything is built from source.

The idea is that when software is built from source specifically tailoring it to the machine that it's to be run on, the software will be ideally optimized for that hardware and you'll see performance benefits over precompiled binary systems. In theory this makes sense, I've seen tests where there weren't significant differences. That much said, I've been tempted to try out gentoo at somepoint when I have a few days to let a system compile itself. Installation may be a bit hairy for those used to point and click interfaces.
