For those of you feeling somewhat cramped by the 4.5-9GB capacity of current single/dual layer dvds.... The inquirer has a story on what is coming.... Ricoh believes that by 2008 they can produce a 200GB optical drive that will be compatible with the Blu-Ray and HD DVD formats. The discs would have 8 layers (compared to Blu-ray/HD's 2 layers).

So when will the first knoppix in this format be out??? It's hard to think about filling a 200GB disc without backing up video/music/etc to it. I haven't spent much time at this point catching up on Bluray (blueray?) vs. HD other than that there's been a format war. I don't yet know what specs for HOW much data. So, what am I to do, but a google search which (top result) leads to blu-ray.com 27GB/54GB is the data capacity (single/dual layer). Among other things, Nero 7 Ultra edition seems to support burning to Blu-Ray drives. A few blu-ray drives are listed as available, but I can't seem to find them for sale. Nothing seems publicly available (prototype is what I see for most of them.)

I need to revisit this search soon when I have time to see what linux support is [ here | coming soon ] and see how much the hardware will be selling for.
