(Now that's not proof it's a GOOD drive, but... it's interesting.) I wonder how an install of Ubuntu Linux would behave on this hardware?

I am now having my 3 hard drive replaced in less than 2 years because of this issue. I don't now if I am mad at HP, Vista or Best Buy. Best Buy geek Squad has had my comp for as long as I have, and nothing seems to fix it. Every new hard drive crashes in less than a year, and I'm without it for 4-8 weeks while they try and solve it. HP has denied an issue, and so has Microsoft..... considering a Mac soon.
