Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 approaching

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

Mozilla is soliciting people to test the candidates for version 1.5.0.7 of both Firefox and Thunderbird, so that sounds as though release is VERY close for that version. It sounds as though there are security issues addressed. (September 7 is the tentative release date… according to this page.)    Send article as PDF

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

First, Linspire released the freely available “freespire” release of their operating system (based on debian linux). Now, users will no longer have to pay an annual subscription for the click n run service. That’s now available for free as well. There is a writeup here. Previously the annual subscription fees were $20/$50 per year depending […]

IE 7 INCOMPATIBLE with WORDPRESS blogs using the stattraq plugin

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

I’ve FINALLY tracked down what was causing the issue with displaying my page in Internet Explorer 7 (RC1). It turns out that the stattraq plugin in wordpress (stattraq site) is part of the problem. Now, I don’t understand exactly WHY… because I do have stattraq on each of the sites, but one… onlineradiotv.com carried this […]

Bizarre Internet Explorer 7 problem – Several of my pages are not displayed AT ALL

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

I’ve been really itching to test this again since I first tried the Vista Beta. In my test of IE7 in the beta of Microsoft Vista, I found that this page came up as “Internet explorer cannot display the webpage.” The error page goes on to suggest a number of connectivity or availability problems. I […]

Hiding a user from the Welcome screen in Windows XP

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

So, in the last article I detailed a solution to getting a legacy application to run under a limited user account in XP. This legacy application wasn’t working correctly without administrator priviliges and in this situation, upgrading to a newer version wasn’t a great option. So, I created a new user account with higher priviliges […]

Windows Run as to let a legacy program run in XP limited user mode

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

Several months back I had to figure out a way to get Create a card gold (5.0?) run on an XP system. The only real problem was that I had setup the account with limited user privileges (shared machine, several users, all with limited account priviliges.) But, somehow the program didn’t work well without administrator […]

Sun java update process vulnerable

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

The Java Runtime Environment from Sun has a vulnerability that’s due in large part to a poor approach to updating it. IF you have not uninstalled previous versions of the JRE on your PC, they are likely still there EVEN after an update AND to make things even worse, a specially designed website could specifiy […]

Run a botnet go to jail

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

It’s really good to see one chalked up against a botnet operator. Friday, a former botnet operator was sentenced to 37 months in prison for breaking into 100’s of thousands of computers. There NEED to be more stories like this. Unfortunately though, with a possible benefit of making $6,000-10,000 per month being a botnet herder…. […]
