Running kontact components standalone

Not long ago, I switched from Evolution to Kontact as my primary mail/calendar/addressbook/etc…. program under linux. One of the nice things about the Kontact suite is that you can either open up the “umbrella” application kontact or, the individual applications. I like the fact that they can still be used standalone. So, I was a bit frustrated to find every link for each of the components to bring up the “umbrella” kontact application, instead of the standalone….

Long story short…. kmenu, run command /usr/bin/component is enough to launch the individual components without the “umbrella” Now, I think they will check to see if kontact is already running. If it is, then they’ll open embedded. But, this is a quick way to get akregator standalone (kmenu, run command, /usr/bin/akregator ) or kmail or korganizer or kaddressbook or knode.

Of course, you don’t have to resort to always entering the above in the “run command” box. You can adjust or create shortcuts in the menu, desktop or kicker to do the same. On one system I tested, I had to explicitly specify the path to akregator (/usr/bin/akregator) to get it to run standalone. For some reason (alias?) just running “akregator” opened embedded.
