The D-Link DWL-800AP+ as a wireless repeater to extend wireless range – Part 7

So, according to D-Link there is a short list of access points that the DWL-800AP+ will repeat for. They are all d-link branded access points. It seems that there have been firmware updates to improve the compatibility with more models (of d-link access points.) Some of the incompatibilities have been with WEP encryption from what I’ve read.

Seeing that the firmware that this came with was v. 1.7 and seeing that the most recent firmware available is 2.0, I thought I might as well give that a try to see if I could get 128-bit WEP encryption working in repeating mode with the linksys WAP11 (v. 1.1) It’s certainly worth a shot at this point.

So, I downloaded the firmware from d-link, uploaded to the DWL-800AP+ through the web interface. Next I re-set my pocket pc and lo and behold…. I now see two available access points with full encryption. The D-Link dwl-800AP+ is now working as a repeater for the old linksys WAP11 (v. 1.1) in full 128-bit WEP encrypted wireless mode. (With the added MAC filtering on the linksys).
